Freight Shippers & Trains
Most people associate transporting merchandise overland from point A to point B with cars, vans, and trucks. This is the norm for most people considering they see the big vans and trucks of well-known shipping companies every day as they drive on the streets or highways. What they do not realize is that there is another option for transporting a lot of goods overland; what I am referring to is freight shippers who use trains to transport goods all across the country.
Since the railroad network was first laid down in the United States, freight shippers have used trains and railroads to ship consumer items from one end of the country to the next. As cars became the norm and vans and trucks have seen widespread use, trains may have taken a backseat but they remain an important avenue for manufacturers to ship their goods. The railroad network is very extensive and a line of train cars can hold much more and transport much more than a small fleet of trucks ever could. In some instances, it is also quicker to ship goods using trains than vans or trucks, especially if you plan on shipping a lot.
The next time you plan to ship a lot of your product to distributors, be sure to keep trains in mind.

Looking for a Good Freight Quote
As a manufacturer of a very popular product I have to send shipments out every single day; usually, I have to ship items early in the morning and later at night before we close up shop for the day. When the business first started me and a partner would stuff as much of our products into our own personal cars and then drive around to our customers. These stores would sell our items to their own customers. After a year and a half our business grew and we created a small fleet of delivery vans and crew whose sole purpose was pack, load, and then transport our merchandise. We did this for about another year. Then we began complementing that by using freight shippers as well as our own team.
But as time went on we found that using shippers was actually more cost-effective than doing it ourselves. As soon as we noticed that we started looking around for a good freight quote from a reliable shipping firm. And when we did, we tasked our old delivery team into packing and loading and never looked back.
Finding the right price for shipping is the only way to ship a lot of goods.

Controlling Freight Costs
Figuring out the best way to spend your money is always in the best interest of any company. It is about controlling costs and being as cost-effective as possible. From improved machinery to efficient changes in work, it is all about trying to spend the least money for the most work possible. Another way in which to save money is by controlling freight costs.
Businesses and manufacturers of consumer goods spend a great deal of their budget on delivering their items to market. This is the only in which they can profit from creating an item that people want. The store, market, and/or distributors see that their customers demand a product and contact the manufacturer of said item and have them ship it to the distributors to sell. But if the manufacturer sees that shipping their products themselves is not very cost-effective, they are going to need a third party to help control freight costs. Established shippers have much more experience than the product makers in regards to transporting their goods to vendors; shippers keep up to date on roads and highways, keep their fleet of vehicles up-to-date and running, and so on. They are the best choice when shipping products is in order.

Taking Care of Business with Freight Shippers
I am a small scale business that is steadily becoming bigger. In fact, we have seen substantial growth in almost every quarter. We have hired dozens of people these last few months and have already finished moving into a larger office building. We design and manufacture a line of swing sets for parks all across the country. We also ship them but transporting our products ourselves has increasingly become a liability. The business has grown substantially but we do not see the merit of shipping our products ourselves. According to our business forecasts we will lose more than what we could possibly gain if we were to buy more shipping vehicles, not to mention the associated maintenance and upkeep of the vehicles. This is why we need freight shippers.
The building we are using has two loading docks and enough warehouse space to adequately store our entire line of swing sets; that much we are thankful for. But the buying of trucks, fueling them, and keeping them running would not be cost-effective enough. Using freight shippers is the only real way for the company to send our products where they need to go. The last thing we want is for a community’s children not to fully enjoy the beautiful park they have nearby.

Freight Shippers Good for Businesses
Freight shippers help sustain the relationships businesses have with their customers. Products need to find their way onto store shelves somehow and the only way to do that is by shipping them. And sometimes it is not just one or two or even three items that need to be transported, but dozens or even hundreds or them. In some instances, whole pallets of products need to show up. With shipments like these it is going to take more than one delivery person in a small car to efficiently and reliably bring them to the stores.
Logistics companies have the means to fill entire pallets full of important goods to people and then ship them. This is a great service for companies who are growing and expanding into other markets. They might have had a dedicated person or persons who deliver their products to stores before but as the company grew and more customers have requested their goods, it might not be a sound financial decision to have their own employees do the shipping when they can hire others to do it in a much more cheaper and efficient manner.
Freight shippers provide a valuable service that keeps the wheels of business going.

How Freight Costs Are Calculated
Logistics companies take a lot of factors into account when they calculate freight costs. Easily one of the most important factors is weight. What the total weight is of all the items loaded will be factored into how it will be transported and what vehicles must be used to safely and efficiently transport it to its destination. Other important considerations include length, width, and height. When accurately accounted for these will determine the appropriate freight class for the shipment.
What must also be considered is the starting destination and the ending destination. The company and drivers need to know what is waiting for them in either destination to ensure the best service possible. Knowing Point A and Point B will also help in determining the best route possible and possible traffic restrictions. For example, many residential zones do not allow trucks over a certain tonnage to drive in that area. The freight shippers need to know things like this in advance to help plan the route and avoid possible fines and accidents. Shippers also need to know if either destination has special equipment or access limitations to determine if they need to bring their own loading equipment or not.
There are a lot of things to the freight costs, so it is best to to factor in as much information as possible.

Freight Shippers Transport Heavy Equipment
In my hometown there is a whole lot of construction going on, mainly for new roads and highways. Every now and then I see heavy equipment like bulldozers and excavators being carried on large flatbed trucks to the construction sites in order to help complete many of the projects that are happening in the area.
Why do construction companies hire freight shippers to transport their equipment instead of simply driving them to their intended destinations? Simple, it is all about expediency and efficiency. The truth of the matter is that construction vehicles are not meant to be very maneuverable or fast on the road. Their purpose is to dig, excavate, bulldoze, etc., not weave in and out of traffic at high speeds. Also, transporting them via a logistics company is much more efficient. These vehicles use up a lot of gas and it would take a whole lot of stops at gas stations to get them to their final destination. Who knows how much time this will take and how much money this would cost to do? Dedicated freight shippers use shipping equipment that can navigate the roads much better than the construction vehicles themselves.
When transporting vehicles, logistics companies provide a valuable service that greatly assists how a construction project progresses.

Freight Shippers and Traveling
I have heard that the United States has over four million miles of road and half of them are paved. With so many roads to drive through I sometimes wonder how much of the United States do freight shippers see in their entire lives. Driving past truck drivers or shipping vans I sometimes imagine I am behind the wheel of one of these vehicles shipping stuff from one end of the country to the next.
I would picture myself driving in a big rig truck with the windows down because I enjoy the feeling of the summer air hitting my face. Every now and then I would turn on the CB radio and listen to what the other truckers are saying. Once in a while I would stop by a rest area, close up my truck, and head into the sleeper attached to my truck. I would sit or lie back on the comfy bed and read a good book and then take a nap. Once I am fully rested I hit the road again. If I have to I will check into a hotel for a night and start the trip anew the morning after. All the while I am enjoying my trip throughout the country.
While I have no doubts freight shippers do hard work I bet every now and then they take the time to take in the sights.

Rivers, Flooding and Freight Rates
Shipping across continents means crossing mountains, rivers, valleys and gorges. The biggest rivers in the world used to pose problems for ancient freight shippers — canoes were difficult to manage, and engineering was not sophisticated enough to build bridges over these rivers.
Take the Mississippi River, which is the fourth largest river in the world. It has dozens of crossings to facilitate Eastern and Western travel by freight shippers. Levees exist to prevent the Lower Mississippi from flooding and damaging roads, although when floods are exacerbated by hurricanes the levees can break.
The deadliest floods ever were the 1931 floods in China, and were a result of the Yangtze, the Yellow and the Huai Rivers flooding — they killed anywhere from 145,000 to 4 million people.
During flood season, the Amazon can be 120 miles wide. There are no bridges over “The River Sea” because it runs primarily through rainforest, where there is no need for bridges.
When the Mississippi floods, however, that often means the Missouri floods. Or the Ohio floods. Or the Arkansas floods. And that can be trouble for freight shippers trying to make deliveries on time. So this spring, and even this summer, make sure that your route hasn’t been affected by flooding, or else it could lead to higher freight rates.

American Highways For Freight Shippers
Traffic is a bummer for freight shippers, which is why road work is such a double-edged sword — it means delays immediately, but relief and smooth pavement in the future.
Ontario Highway 401 is North America’s busiest highway, which is really saying something considering Los Angeles is renowned for its terrible traffic. This stretch of highway runs from Windsor to Montreal, a corridor along which nearly half of the entire Canadian population lives. Expansion is in the works to make this highway six lanes each way.
The 401 has more volume than the Katy Freeway in Houston, which is the widest highway in the world with a total of 26 lanes. With 12 main lanes, 8 lanes of access roads, and 6 HOV roads, it is also one of the busiest highways in the world.
But perhaps the most incredible highway freight shippers traverse is the Pan-American highway. This highway system originally ran from Buenos Aires to Monterrey, Mexico, making it easy to ship freight from North America to South during WWII. Today it continues through the U.S. and Canada, although it is not usually labeled as part of the Pan-American system. The Darien Gap is a fifty mile stretch between Panama and Columbia, and is the only break in the highway. It is mostly swampland and rainforest, and on the Panama side, quickly rises into mountains. Efforts have been made to construct a highway but the environmental effects would be devastating.
